Secret World Wildlife Rescue in Somerset provides a vital rescue service caring for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. The new Treatment Centre provides modern facilities for the rehabilitation of the animals and their safe return to the wild wherever possible.
The facility includes a main reception and waiting area, animal rehabilitation areas, assessment rooms, preparation areas, office accommodation, staff areas, toilets and storage. The building is fully accessible with a lift providing access to all three floor levels. External landscaped areas and a new permeable parking surface complete the setting for this new purpose-built facility.
Delivered under a Design and Build Contract with local contractors, Harris Bros and Collard Ltd, we were responsible for the full Technical Design, including construction details, materials and product specifications, building regulation approvals, etc. and dealing with technical queries during the construction stage.
The design package centred on a detailed 3D CAD model using BIM technology to integrate the structural frame & service routes provided by the consultant engineers and specialists. This approach enabled clash detection at an early stage of the technical design process and reduced the risk of construction errors on site.
Located in an area at risk from flooding, there was a planning requirement for the building to be flood resilient, resulting in the specification of appropriate materials and incorporating suitable flood resilient detailing.
The exterior of the streel framed structure adopts a mixture of timber and profiled aluminium sheets, reflecting an agricultural aesthetic appropriate for its rural context, whilst creating an attractive, robust, low maintenance building.
The Treatment Centre provides a modern, clean and safe environment to enable the dedicated staff at Secret World Wildlife Rescue to continue to rescue, care for and rehabilitate our vulnerable local wildlife.
