The spectacular 50m Olympic-sized swimming pool at Millfield School has helped make the school one of the top places in the UK for nurturing and developing young talented swimmers, many of whom go on to represent their country at junior and senior levels.
The pool was designed to meet ASA international standards with the main 50m pool incorporating a moveable bulkhead to ensure competition accuracy and to subdivide the pool for water polo matches. The complex also includes a separate training / swim down pool plus two large spectator galleries with tiered seating, changing rooms and a training / functions deck. The dramatic interior is enhanced by generous roof glazing and the main entrance lobby which provides visitors with open views down the pool at water level. The pool featured in the Modern Pentathlon World Cup held at Millfield.
The practice has recently been closely involved in a complex refurbishment / maintenance programme with the school. This intense period of work, involving plant, pool liner and roof glazing, had to be undertaken during the summer holiday period to ensure minimal disruption to the athletes’ training programme and wider school use.
