Work on the the refurbishment of Westway Cinema in Frome, for S & B Cinemas, was completed in March 2017. The existing mid-20th Century single screen cinema building has been converted to provide three new high quality multiplex cinema screens.
LED Architects acted as Architects and Principal Designers and worked closely with the Client, Principal Contractor and the Local Authority Building Control Authority.
The new screens were constructed within an existing concrete framed structure at first floor level, above a shopping centre and required significant remediation of hazardous materials. Robust detailing was required to deal with the complex acoustic requirements between cinema screens, adjacent rooms and adjoining properties. Calculation of sight lines ensured optimum viewing of the new screens was achieved and the new layout had to satisfy all the statutory regulations required for public use buildings
The building has been finished to very high quality and has been extremely well received by the people of Frome.
