Wing House is one of the main boarding houses at Sidcot School and was in much need of refurbishment and upgrading to meet expected levels of quality and space.
To this end, a major extension was implemented providing new state-of-the-art boarding facilities for 13 students and senior houseparents. The new accommodation comprises individual study-bedrooms, complete with en-suite shower pods, plus a larger ‘double’ study-bedroom with en-suite designed for fully accessible wheelchair use. The generous houseparents’ apartment has 3 bedrooms, kitchen/diner, study and large open-plan living area with a south-facing raised terrace offering fine views over the surrounding landscape.
The new annexe made space available in the original building, so that existing bedrooms and bathrooms have been reconfigured to create a far more spacious, high quality living environment. In total, 35 study-bed spaces have been created at Wing House plus two large common rooms, one of which incorporates a striking glazed link to the annexe. A separate house study, laundry area and generously refurbished assistant houseparent’s flat is also included.
The new annexe continues the school’s drive towards high quality sustainable design and incorporates super-insulated timber frame construction using insulation manufactured from sheep’s wool and also recycled plastic bottles. Externally the annexe reflects the colours and tones of the original house using facing brickwork and clay plain tiles with distinctive zinc-clad dormer windows.
