The Colin Atkinson Pavilion at The County Ground in Taunton has formed an important part of the Club’s history.
It was built in the 1970s and originally accommodated fining facilities, management offices and the players’ changing rooms. However, following completion of the Andy Caddick Pavilion (also designed by LED Architects), the original facilities became redundant.
This provided an excellent opportunity to breathe new life back into this iconic building and provide Somerset County Cricket Club with much needed additional spectator facilities.
This major refurbishment project resulted in the original building being completely gutted, including the careful removal in internal floors and walls. The roofscape was remodelled and integrated with a new first floor seating balcony and external staircases. Internally, the facilities now include a new extended banqueting room and bar area, a fantastic new ‘long room’ at first floor level with spectacular views across the Ground to the church towers beyond, new commercial kitchen and servery, refurbished toilets and new reception with main staircase & lift.
The remodelled pavilion now benefits from a number of environmental design improvements, such as an integrated passive ventilation system with wind-catcher terminals, high levels of natural daylight with solar shading to control summer heat gain & glare, and a significant increase in the thermal performance of the building fabric, including hi-efficiency replacement windows & glazing system.
The ‘new’ building has proved extremely successful for the Club, not only during match days, but also as a much-needed conference facility within Taunton.
