Chemistry Laboratories and Physics Block

Sustainability was integral to the design. A highly insulated, breathable external envelope, generous controlled daylight and a passive ventilation system linked to CO₂ sensors reduce energy demand while maintaining good comfort and air quality. The completed building provides accessible, uncluttered circulation and robust, light-filled teaching spaces designed for intensive daily use.

Set at the edge of Millfield School’s senior campus, the project creates a contemporary public face while fitting carefully into the established school setting. The scheme provides six new chemistry laboratories, three refurbished laboratories, two preparation rooms, an IT research room, sixth form study space and a 100-seat lecture theatre with movable raked seating. The adjoining physics block was remodelled with a new pitched roof, upgraded windows, improved insulation and renewed internal finishes.
