Project
The careful restoration of a Grade II* listed civic building, returning important historic spaces to public use while creating contemporary accommodation for Bristol’s Registrar’s Department.

Once the administrative hub of Bristol and later the city’s magistrates’ court, this remarkable Grade II* listed building had stood empty and neglected for many years. LED’s work brought it back into public use as the home of Bristol’s Registrar’s Department, carefully restoring significant historic spaces while introducing contemporary offices and archive accommodation.
We collaborated with an architectural historian to develop an internal colour palette and detailing appropriate to the age and character of the building. This informed a sensitive approach to the restoration, allowing the richly decorated interiors to be brought back to life while accommodating the requirements of a modern public service.
Consultant archaeologists also worked alongside the project team during a live investigation within the central courtyard. Medieval finds uncovered during the works — including a gold wedding ring — were subsequently incorporated into displays within the completed building, adding another layer to the story of this important Bristol landmark.
